Writing away – EXCERPT

I’ve been working on a YA novel for the past month and it has been so much fun! I’ve never written YA before, so it has been a learning curve. I’ve never finished a novel, either, and I’m determined that this is going to be the one.

I’m all for giving, so here is a snippet from my work-in-progress for you to enjoy.

“Here, Aiden, go play with my phone. I want to talk to Drue,” Beau said, his expression serious.

“Come on, Beau, I don’t think now’s a good time.” I so did not want to have this conversation.

Aiden, the traitor, took the phone. “I think it’s the perfect time. You’ve been avoiding him all year. Shoot, he gave up his last year at his fancy private school to be here with you. Just listen to him.”

My jaw dropped at Aiden’s pronouncement. I turned to Beau. “You did what?”

Aiden took the chance to skedaddle. He hurried across the field away from us, giving us privacy.

Beau had the grace to look uncomfortable. “That was supposed to be a secret.”

“You told me that your parents were out of the country and you were staying with Aiden to keep out of trouble.”

“Well, yeah. They are out of the country and staying with Aiden is keeping me out of trouble. I didn’t want to put pressure on you by telling you, but I haven’t been hiding my feelings. You had to know.”

“Well, I didn’t. Jeez, Beau. The three of us are best friends. I thought you wanted to spend senior year with us before we split up for college.” As if I could go to college.

“Listen to me Drue.” Beau was nothing if not persistent. He reached for me and laid his hands on my shoulders. “I love you.”

“I love you, too, Beau, you know that. We’ve been best friends for years.” My eyes darted left and right, trying to find anything to look at besides his face.

“Drue, please. Look at me.”

I made the effort and dragged my eyes to his.

“I love you. Like, really love you.” His expression, usually cheerful with a light in his jade green eyes and a smile on his lips, was pleading. I could see the truth of what he was saying in his eyes, now troubled and dark as the waves in a storm.

Let me know what you think in the comments.
